Sustainability Reuse & donation

Clearing out a flat responsibly: reuse, donation and recycling in Ticino

Sell, donate, recycle: a practical guide to clearing out a flat in Ticino, with tips on ecocentri, the SENS and Swico take-back of electronics and what needs special handling.

Clearing out a home is often one of the first steps when preparing for a move. To organise the rest of the process, follow our moving checklist, from eight weeks out to moving day, and make sure you have enough time to sort, pack and transport your belongings.

Whether you are moving house, downsizing or emptying the home of a relative, a clear-out quickly turns into dozens of decisions. Doing it responsibly — giving usable things a second life and recycling the rest correctly — is better for the environment and often less expensive than throwing everything away. Here is a practical approach for Ticino.

Start with an inventory

Walk through every room, including the cellar, the attic and any garage or storage unit, and make a list. For each item, decide whether to:

  • keep it — what moves with you or goes to family members;
  • sell it — furniture, appliances and objects in good condition that still have a value;
  • donate it — usable items that are unlikely to sell;
  • recycle it — materials that can be recovered: wood, metal, paper, cardboard, glass, textiles, electronics;
  • dispose of it — what can be neither reused nor recycled.

Take photos of the larger pieces: they are useful for adverts, for donation requests and for getting a precise clearance quote.

Give things a second life

Selling

Online marketplaces and local classified ads work well for furniture, bicycles, tools and household appliances in good condition. Set realistic prices and allow enough time: collection by buyers can take several weeks.

Donating

Many charity shops, second-hand shops and social organisations accept furniture, household goods, books and clothes. A few practical points:

  • Call ahead. Space is often limited, and each organisation decides what it can accept.
  • Only clean, complete and working items. Broken or heavily worn objects create extra costs for the people who receive them.
  • Ask about collection. Some organisations collect larger pieces; others ask you to bring them.

When we clear out a flat, we can set aside reusable items and coordinate their delivery to donation points, so they don't end up as waste.

Recycling and disposal in Ticino

Ecocentri and municipal collections

Each Comune organises waste collection in its own way. Most have an ecocentro — a collection point where materials are separated — and set dates or procedures for bulky waste (rifiuti ingombranti). Opening hours, accepted materials and any fees vary, so check your Comune's website or waste calendar before you go. Separating materials properly is essential: wood, metal, cardboard, glass, textiles and household waste each go into their own container.

Electrical and electronic appliances

In Switzerland, old electrical and electronic devices — from fridges and washing machines to computers, TVs and small appliances — do not belong in household or bulky waste. They can be returned free of charge to shops that sell the same type of device, and to the official collection points of the SENS and Swico take-back systems. Recycling is financed by an advance recycling fee included in the purchase price of new devices.

Tip: Before handing in a computer, phone or tablet, back up your data and reset the device to its factory settings. Remove memory cards and SIM cards.

What needs special handling

Some things must never end up in normal waste, and we do not transport them:

  • paints, varnishes, solvents and chemicals;
  • gas cylinders, fuels and ammunition;
  • materials that may contain asbestos (for example old floor coverings or panels) — these must be assessed and removed by specialists.

Batteries and energy-saving light bulbs can be returned where they are sold. For other special waste, your Comune will tell you when and where it is collected.

Documents and personal data

Old letters, bank statements and medical records contain personal data. Shred them or use a secure destruction service instead of putting them in the paper collection.

How a professional clear-out works

A good clearance company looks at the home — on site or from photos — before quoting, explains what is included and separates materials on site. With us, disposal fees at the ecocentro or municipal collection points are included in the clearance quote, unless stated otherwise. We leave the rooms empty and swept, ready for the handover or for a thorough end-of-lease cleaning.
